Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in development, ending three years of speculation with a single line in its second-quarter shareholder letter dated August 6, Polygon reports.
We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.
That is the whole of the announcement. No title, release window, platforms, story details or developer were named, and the company has not confirmed whether Avalanche Software, which made the first game, returns. Nor has it said whether the sequel will carry multiplayer, online or co-operative features.
The confirmation sits inside a wider strategy shift. Warner Bros. Discovery told shareholders it is narrowing its games slate to four franchises worth more than $1 billion each, backing fewer and higher-conviction titles. In 2025, CEO and president of global streaming and games JB Perrette named those four as Harry Potter and Hogwarts Legacy, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat and DC. The first releases under the refocused strategy were Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, the company's second Game of Thrones mobile game.
The publisher has reason to lean on the franchise. Hogwarts Legacy launched in 2023, became the highest-grossing game of that year - the first title outside Call of Duty and Rockstar Games to top the annual chart since 2009 - and has since sold more than 40 million copies. Warner Bros. executives had called a follow-up a priority for years: in 2024, CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels described a successor as one of the company's biggest priorities a couple of years down the road, and then-Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad told Variety the games team was coordinating story elements in the sequel with the HBO Harry Potter series.
The rest of the letter was less flattering: Warner Bros. Discovery acknowledged that its first-half 2026 releases fell short of expectations, and said games would carry a heavier load for the Studios segment going forward. It has also had high-profile failures to absorb, among them Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, MultiVersus and the cancelled Wonder Woman game.
The wider Harry Potter push continues around the sequel. The HBO Max television series premieres on Christmas Day this year, a Harry Potter tour opens in Shanghai next year, and a Harry Potter Land is planned for Abu Dhabi.
