Infinity Ward calls Modern Warfare 4’s blinding muzzle flash a bug

A faulty suppressor attachment caused the screen-filling flash in the alpha gameplay premiere, the studio says, and muzzle smoke has been toned down.

Infinity Ward has said the severe muzzle flash that dominated the first hands-on gameplay of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was a bug rather than a design choice, and that a fix has already been applied.

The effect became the main talking point after content creators were invited to play and livestream an early alpha build of the game, including the new Kill Block map, in the Gunfight mode at Fanatics Fest in New York. Every trigger pull produced a bright flash and a large cloud of smoke that covered much of the screen. Both PC Gamer and Dexerto reported that it was most pronounced on high-power weapons such as snipers and in darker environments.

Creators playing the build said as much on stream. "Am I supposed to be able to see people while I'm shooting?" asked Marksman, while streamer IceManIsaac said the game was "literally flash banging you after every shot." Dexerto notes that complaints about weapon visibility in the series date back to Modern Warfare 2019.

The studio’s response

These are pre-release Alpha builds and are still very much a work in progress. The muzzle flash VFX issue in today’s Alpha gameplay is a bug that will be fixed for Beta.

The studio followed up a day later with the cause and the remedy. It said it had rolled out a fix for a bugged suppressor that was using the wrong muzzle flash effect, and that it had separately reduced muzzle smoke opacity across all weapons for that weekend’s preview sessions. "A clear sight picture is critical to the gameplay experience," the studio added. "Keep the energy coming, we're engaged."

The episode landed on top of an existing argument about visual recoil, which Infinity Ward had already addressed before the premiere by saying it was aware of the concerns and would monitor feedback through the beta. Some players told the studio that the recoil complaint was separate from the suppressor bug and remained unresolved.

For a first public look at the game, the timing was awkward: the alpha build was the community’s first extended view of Modern Warfare 4 in motion, and the flash obscured much of what it was meant to show. Infinity Ward has said the beta is where the corrected effects, and the wider question of visual recoil, will be judged.
