Insomniac says a UV map bug, not generative AI, made Marvel's Wolverine signs

Director of community and marketing James Stevenson said a fix is coming for the glitched bathroom signs players flagged on social media.

Insomniac Games has said that Marvel's Wolverine contains no generative AI, after two in-game bathroom signs circulated on social media as suspected AI-generated art. IGN reports that the studio attributes the signs to a rendering bug it is already working to fix.

The signs surfaced in a minute-long clip posted by the TikTok user SmoothMango, which IGN saw via Kotaku. The clip focused on two bathroom signs whose figures appear melted together, a look the poster compared to AI-generated assets.

Folks, that looks AI-generated. I am trying to think of a way to describe this that is not AI generation because there’s no way it’s a bathroom for mutants. That looks supremely suss.

Images pulled from the video were reposted on X by the user Rock Solid, where the claim spread further. James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, replied to that post directly on September 18.

No. This is a UV map bug and we have a fix coming. There are no AI generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine.

IGN reports that Insomniac has not said when the fix will be deployed, or whether it addresses other instances of the same glitch beyond the signs shown in the clip.

A second week of post-launch friction

The exchange follows a separate complaint about the game’s Scent Trails, the navigation markers players nicknamed “fart gas”. IGN reports that a small fix for those arrived the day before Stevenson’s post, and that Insomniac has said it is investigating a toggle for the tracking feature as post-launch work continues. Other players have criticised the linearity of the game’s story.

Marvel’s Wolverine launched on PlayStation 5 on September 15. IGN scored it 6 out of 10, writing that its “slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can’t quite save it from being anything more than okay.”
