Jagex Pulls Off Its Biggest-Ever Live Event With Deadman All Stars, Despite OSRS Never Being Built for LAN

Jagex has staged its largest in-person event to date with Deadman All Stars, a live esports tournament built around Old School RuneScape that drew roughly 4,000 attendees.

Jagex has staged its largest in-person event to date with Deadman All Stars, a live esports tournament built around Old School RuneScape that drew roughly 4,000 attendees. The scale alone marks a leap for the studio, but the more striking part of the story is what it took to get there. Old School RuneScape was never designed to run on a LAN, which made staging a competitive, offline tournament a real technical challenge, and one Jagex has admitted it was not certain it could meet.

A Game Never Built for the LAN Stage

Jagex has been direct about the scale of the hurdle involved. Old School RuneScape, in the studio's own words, "was not built to have a LAN setup at all." That is not a minor caveat. It points to a mismatch between how the game normally runs and what a live, in-person competitive tournament demands from the underlying tech. Getting Deadman All Stars onto a stage meant working around that limitation, and Jagex has been candid that a smooth outcome was never a given. "We were doubting at times whether we actually can pull it off," the studio said. For a game with as long a history and as unusual a technical footing as Old School RuneScape, reaching a point where it could be run competitively in a physical venue was a hurdle in its own right, separate from the logistics of putting on a live show.

Biggest Live Event Yet

The event still went ahead at scale. Roughly 4,000 people attended in person, and Jagex is now calling it the biggest live event it has ever staged. For a game that was never built with a LAN in mind, clearing that bar in front of a crowd that size is a notable result. The turnout gives a concrete measure of how far Jagex was willing to push a live Old School RuneScape event, and of what the studio was prepared to take on technically to make it happen. Deadman All Stars stands as a marker of how far Jagex is willing to push its live events, and of the technical work required to get one onto a stage. With roughly 4,000 attendees and a game that had to be wrangled into a setup it was never designed for, it lands as the studio's biggest in-person competition to date.
