Disney and Square Enix used a D23 presentation in California on Friday to give Kingdom Hearts 4 a release window and to announce an original Kingdom Hearts anime series. Square Enix said the game will arrive in late 2027.
Polygon reported the platform list as Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, and Xbox Series X. Square Enix had already confirmed earlier this summer, alongside the first new gameplay in four years, that the game would be available on Switch 2 at launch.
A Coco world for Sora
The 90-second trailer shown at the event introduced a world based on Pixar’s Coco. According to Polygon’s description, Miguel and Hector appear rendered closely to their film versions while Sora fights Heartless Shadows in Día de Muertos face paint, carrying a Coco-themed keyblade assembled from guitars, sugar skulls, bones and marigolds.
The same trailer returns to Quadratum, the real-world city introduced in the series’ most recent chapter, where giant Heartless invade. Polygon also reported brief monologuing from Mickey Mouse, a conversation between Goofy and Hades, and spectral versions of Goofy and Donald Duck.
An anime for Disney Plus
Disney said the anime series is coming to Disney Plus and the Disney Channel, created in collaboration with Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix.

The series is described as reimagining the adventure with a brand-new story that expands on the universe of Kingdom Hearts while celebrating its established characters. No release date, episode count or cast was announced, and neither company said how the series relates to the games’ continuity.
Square Enix’s official description of the game frames Kingdom Hearts 4 as a new instalment in the action role-playing series in which Sora journeys to fresh realms, meets new figures and awakens new powers, beginning in Quadratum. The D23 announcements land a day after Disney publicly described Kingdom Hearts as a billion-dollar franchise ahead of the panel.
