Konami has said it is investigating Performance Mode problems on PS5 and PS5 Pro that players began reporting after Patch 1.07 for the Silent Hill 2 remake, according to a message the publisher posted to X and coverage by Eurogamer.
Our team is currently investigating these issues and looking into potential solutions. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We’ll share more information as soon as it becomes available.
By its own patch notes, the update was meant to move in the opposite direction. Konami said Patch 1.07 would improve fog rendering, reduce shadow flickering, cut down on movement-related visual artefacts and raise overall image quality on both PS5 and PS5 Pro.
Players instead reported crushed blacks and excessively dark shadows in Performance Mode on both consoles. Quality Mode, which caps the frame rate at 30fps, appears to be unaffected. Reports collected by Eurogamer describe worse shadow strobing than before the patch and pixelation on James during mirror scenes, along with complaints that the update disturbed parts of Quality Mode that had previously worked.
The reaction gathered on Reddit was largely negative, with one player describing the result as a crushed black smear in Performance Mode. Others questioned how the build cleared testing at all, one commenter asking how on earth it passed QA. Similar accounts appeared on ResetEra, where users said the problems were visible on a base PS5 and not only on the Pro, and described affected foliage as looking cursed.
A remake with a history of hardware trouble
This is not the remake’s first difficulty on Sony hardware. Digital Foundry’s technical review at launch flagged image stability issues on PS5 Pro that were not present on the standard PlayStation 5, and criticised the game’s PSSR upscaling implementation. One player at launch called it scummy to advertise the game as Pro Enhanced when it played worse than on the base unit. A patch addressing graphical glitches followed within weeks of release.
Konami has not given a timeline for a fix to the Patch 1.07 problems, saying only that it will share more information when it has it.
