Loftia sets a November 3 early access date for its sky-island MMO

Qloud Games confirmed the date at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, firming up a launch window the studio had given as autumn earlier this month.

Loftia, the crowdfunded life-sim MMO from Qloud Games, enters early access on November 3, the studio confirmed in a trailer shown at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct.

The date replaces the autumn launch window the developer gave at the start of September. The game has been in development for four years and arrives on PC and Mac through Steam and the Epic Games Store at $30, with a 17% discount at the start of early access.

An MMO built around neighbours, not combat

Loftia gives each player a floating island to live on and build out, with sustainable systems the studio has drawn from real-world equivalents: renewable power, hydroponic growing shelves, recycling and ecology. Players live alongside one another in neighbourhoods and contribute to large-scale world projects that anyone can join.

There is no combat. Group activities instead take the form of time-based missions built around puzzles, platforming and exploration, alongside animal rescue, farming and gathering. Customisation runs through most of it, covering player avatars, pets and homes, and the trailer spends much of its length on what players can decorate.

We wanted a relaxing online world we could escape to with our friends—a third space with a welcoming community, things to do, and a home we could keep on coming back to.
Michael Su, co-founder and studio director, Qloud Games

In material accompanying the announcement, the studio framed the design against the genre's norms: "Where many MMOs center their experiences around combat and competition, Loftia focuses on cooperation and shared progress."

Cracks in the islands

The trailer also points at a wider story. A world-ending event is approaching, opening literal cracks in the sky islands, and the game ties it to something deep beneath the floating world. Players are expected to work out how to meet it collectively rather than individually, which is the friction the studio has put behind an otherwise unhurried game.

Loftia was one of several games dated during the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct. Its early access build is available to wishlist on Steam ahead of the November 3 launch.
