Lucasfilm and Disney have set September 2 as the Disney Plus streaming date for The Mandalorian and Grogu, announcing the date alongside the opening of D23, Polygon reported. The release lands roughly 100 days after the film's theatrical debut.
The Star Wars spin-off, directed by Jon Favreau, premiered in cinemas on May 22 and took $345 million at the global box office. That figure sits well below the series' previous theatrical release, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which passed $1 billion in 2020.
The Disney Plus date completes a staggered home release. The film went on sale digitally in July through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango, and a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release is scheduled for August 25, with a SteelBook version and a "Beskar Collector's Edition" arriving alongside the standard Blu-ray and DVD editions.
A mixed critical reception
Reviews for Mando and Grogu's move from television to the big screen ranged from middling to mostly positive. In Polygon's review, critic Jake Kleinman argued the film "isn't a movie for long-time Star Wars fans; it's a desperate attempt to cultivate a new generation before it's too late."
Baby Yoda was a once-in-a-generation character whose appeal has more to do with his visual design than the canon and lore that surrounds him (a tradition that dates back to the very beginning of Star Wars).
Kleinman added that Favreau "understands this better than anyone," describing a film built around cutaways to Grogu and occasional references older fans would recognise, and concluding that while making it feel like a film at all was an achievement, its failure to be "a Star Wars Movie" meant it "probably never should have been made."
Merchandising has run in parallel with the release schedule: Hasbro is selling a 1:1 scale animatronic Grogu aimed at collectors and cosplayers for $599.99, a first-of-its-kind premium figure that owners can keep at home and feed.
The September 2 date returns the pair to what Polygon called their original home, a little over three months after the theatrical run began.
