Marvel Rivals opened the second phase of its Path to Doomsday event on July 30, NetEase Games has confirmed. The phase, titled Path to Doomsday — Avengers: Age of Ultron, adds a player-versus-environment mode themed after the 2015 Marvel film of the same name.
Path to Doomsday is a staged crossover built to lead into the December theatrical release of Avengers: Doomsday. Its first phase was themed after the original Avengers film and ran from the end of April to the end of May. Polygon notes that if the second phase keeps to a comparable length it would run for roughly a month, into the end of August, though NetEase has not published an end date.
What the mode adds
The event trailer shows Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man and the Hulk fighting waves of Ultron robots across a new Avengers Tower map. NetEase's official description says the mode carries story cinematics and dialogue. At the time of Polygon's report, published shortly before the mode went live, the publisher had not detailed how it is structured, what its objectives are, or what it rewards.
Two cosmetics ship with the phase: skins for Ultron and Scarlet Witch based on their appearances in the film. Separate Spider-Man and Hulk skins arrived on July 31, but Polygon reports those are tied to the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day rather than to the Age of Ultron event.
Two phases still to come
NetEase has said the remaining two phases of Path to Doomsday will be themed after Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame respectively, and that both will be added before Avengers: Doomsday reaches cinemas in December. The publisher has shared no details about what either will contain.
For now the Age of Ultron phase is the only part of Path to Doomsday that is live. NetEase has not said whether the mode will remain available once the phase closes, or whether it will be replaced outright when the Infinity War phase begins.
