Marvel Rivals patch dials back hero visual effects

NetEase says the update softens ability VFX across a lineup of heroes to keep team fights readable.

NetEase has toned down the visual effects on a range of Marvel Rivals hero abilities, saying the change is meant to make team fights easier to read. The adjustments shipped as part of a set of fixes and optimisations in the hero shooter's latest title update, reported by PC Gamer on July 16.

We've dialled back the visual effects for a lineup of heroes to cut down on battlefield chaos and keep your superhero clashes crisp and clear.

All of Jubilee's base abilities were tuned down, as were most of the game's newer Team-Up abilities. NetEase did not publish a per-ability breakdown, telling players the list was too extensive to detail in full and that it would "keep the scanner running" with further optimisations to come.

How much changed in practice

PC Gamer, which played after the notes went out, reported a mixed result. Moments where several heroes used their ultimates at once still produced a screen the outlet found unreadable, but it said playing alongside a Jubilee no longer caused the same strain it had before the patch.

Visual clutter has been a running complaint about Marvel Rivals. PC Gamer attributed it to the pace at which NetEase has expanded the roster since launch, the addition of Team-Up abilities layered on top of each hero's own kit, and premium skins that ship with bespoke effects of their own. The outlet also pointed to the game's interface and map art as compounding factors, saying some stages make it hard to tell level geometry from an incoming ability.

NetEase has not set out which heroes are next in line for a visual pass, and the notes frame the work as continuing rather than finished. PC Gamer's own assessment was that the game is unlikely to end up looking clean, and that the most a patch of this kind can do is keep the clutter in check.
