Marvel's Wolverine defaults to 60fps with ray tracing on PS5

Insomniac says a ray-traced performance mode is the default for the first time in one of its games, ahead of a September 15 launch.

Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine will run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled by default in the base PlayStation 5's performance mode. The studio described the setup in August 13 hands-on previews and an interview with IGN.

Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed said the target was set early in development, and that the team met it. Head of technology Mike Fitzgerald framed it as a change in how the studio treats the mode.

This is going to be a 60 frames per second game with ray tracing as the PS5 should have. We're going to build the game around this and towards this. And it's the default mode for the first time for us in one of our games. It's important for the presentation.

Fitzgerald contrasted that with the studio's previous releases, where fidelity and performance modes were separated and a ray-traced performance option tended to arrive late in development. Here, he said, the team committed to shipping it from the start.

Combat built for the frame rate

Hands-on impressions tie the target to how the game plays. Combat is fast and aggressive: basic attacks combine Logan's claws with kicks and parries, while abilities such as Tornado Spin and Knee Breaker close gaps and control groups of enemies. Enemies push back hard enough that players have to keep moving, manage Rage and use mobility deliberately, and leaping between them is the kind of movement that benefits most from the higher frame rate.

Away from the city

The game also moves Insomniac away from the dense cityscapes of its Spider-Man titles. The studio has put work into foliage, jungle technology and wind-reactive vegetation for wilderness areas such as Canada, while city locations including Madripoor lean on neon-lit markets and streets.

Marvel's Wolverine is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
