Marvel’s Wolverine trailer reveals Lady Deathstrike

Insomniac’s new cinematic sets Wolverine against The Hand and introduces one of the character’s longest-running rivals from the comics.

Insomniac released a new cinematic trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine late on July 16, and its closing scene introduced Lady Deathstrike to the PS5 action adventure.

The trailer is largely a fight montage, following Wolverine through confrontations with soldiers in locations around the world while he holds on to a photograph of himself and Jean Grey. Dexerto notes that the photograph suggests the two are, or were, a couple in the game’s continuity. Sabretooth appears again in the montage before the sequence turns to a fight with The Hand, where an opponent with unusually long, sharp claws gets the better of Wolverine. As the photograph burns, his voiceover says: "Who I am, who I was… when that’s gone, there won’t be anything left but rage."

Who Lady Deathstrike is

In the comics, Yuriko Oyama is a cyborg assassin whose skeleton is bonded with Adamantium in the same way Wolverine’s is, and whose fingers end in retractable Adamantium claws rather than nails. Her cybernetic enhancements give her superhuman strength, speed and durability, and some versions of the character heal rapidly.

Her grudge is inherited. She is the daughter of Kenji Oyama, the Japanese crime lord and scientist who devised the process for bonding Adamantium to bone, and she regards Wolverine’s skeleton as an insult to her father’s legacy. In the trailer she appears to be operating alongside The Hand, the ninja organization that also features in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The character has been adapted before. Kelly Hu played Lady Deathstrike in 2003’s X2, and a variant of the character appeared briefly in 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine. Those films treat her as a mutant rather than a cyborg, and the trailer does not make clear which version Insomniac has chosen. Her role in the game beyond the single encounter shown has not been detailed.
