Arc System Works has released a final trailer for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls ahead of the four-versus-four fighting game’s Aug. 6 launch. The video leads on the story mode’s central premise — the Champion of the Universe convening a tournament to decide the fate of Earth — and revisits material the studio has shown before, including a story written by comics author Kieron Gillen, whose credits include Once & Future, Die, Young Avengers, and Uncanny X-Men, and a roster of 20 playable characters.
Deadpool gets the clearest look yet. The character breaks the fourth wall repeatedly across the trailer, including a remark about how thoroughly the four-versus-four format fills the screen with fighters, and at one point strikes a Dragon Ball-style power-up pose that recalls Cell’s introduction in Dragon Ball FighterZ — another Arc System Works game.
The trailer also shows Battle Arcadia, which appears to be a party-game-style side mode along the lines of Grand Bruise in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. Visually the game continues to lean on the mix of comic book and anime styling that has been its most consistent selling point.
A beta that split opinion
The trailer arrives after a beta weekend that left fighting game players divided. Praise for the animation, soundtrack, and overall sense of style was close to unanimous, and Arc System Works' take on Magik was the most-played character among the 16 fighters available in the test, out of the full roster of 20. Players also responded well to the range of abilities across the roster.
The PC port was the sticking point. The game ran badly even on reasonably powerful machines, which caused problems in online play. Separately, some players found the combat too slow: character movement and attacks are unusually deliberate compared with the pace of most tag fighters. Arc System Works has said it will address the PC issues, but with the game out next week there is little time to do so.
