Nintendo announced Metroid Ravenous during its September 9 Direct, and dated it for January 28, 2027, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. It is Samus Aran's first side-scrolling adventure since Metroid Dread in 2021.
The debut trailer is narrated by Samus, who speaks throughout. Video Games Chronicle transcribed her account of how she got there: "I was attacked by unknown assailants and sustained grave injuries. I don't know where I am. Getting back to the surface won't be easy. My chances of getting off this moon are slim at best."
I will survive, and I will make it home, even if I have to feed on my enemies to do so. It's eat or be eaten.
Feeding on enemies
The trailer shows Samus attacked by enemies that drain her energy, and hints at a mechanic in which she feeds on them to gain extra powers. GameSpot reports that how the feeding augments her has not been explained. Eurogamer described the game as appearing to follow on from Metroid Dread, which was developed by MercurySteam.
GameSpot also reports that the trailer introduced a new group of villains, several locations Samus travels through, and a green suit carrying a glowing energy sword, later named the Metroid Suit.
Amiibo and editions
Nintendo announced tie-in amiibo figures alongside the game, plus a special edition that includes an additional figure. GameSpot reports that an amiibo of the Metroid Suit is included with the Collector's Edition.
The game's existence was not entirely a surprise. Dexerto reports that the Metroid Ravenous title surfaced in July through a ratings registration in Brazil, which was subsequently removed, leaving what it covered unclear until Nintendo's announcement.
GameSpot notes that Samus's most recent outing, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, launched in December after nearly a decade in development.
Metroid Ravenous was one of several Switch 2 reveals in the same broadcast. GameSpot reports the Direct also carried Kirby and the World Beyond, new editions of Pikmin 4 and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and third-party announcements including Persona 6, a Switch 2 edition of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion and a port of Monster Hunter Wilds.
