Miyazaki says FromSoftware still has a “heavy focus” on single-player games

The Duskbloods director told IGN that shipping two multiplayer games back to back was never a plan, and that long multiplayer projects make him want to build single-player again.

FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki says the studio is not abandoning single-player games, despite following the co-operative Elden Ring: Nightreign with the PvPvE-focused The Duskbloods.

Asked by IGN whether back-to-back multiplayer projects signalled the direction the team is heading, Miyazaki said the sequencing was not deliberate.

It's not necessarily some big reveal saying this is the direction we plan to go in moving forward. We still have a heavy focus on single-player content as well. This is just something that happened to work out the way it did.

He added that there “was never really any big plan that these two games would both release next to each other.”

Miyazaki explained that ideas had piled up at the studio over the years that had nowhere to go in a solo game. The Duskbloods, which he said is heavily influenced by board games and TTRPGs in its mechanics, became the place to try them. “These things seemed like great ideas but didn't really fit the context of a single-player game,” he said.

He also framed the project as one he personally wanted to exist. “Personally, it's very fun to make a multiplayer game like this,” Miyazaki said. “It's not something we've done a lot and we're looking forward to seeing players' reactions and getting feedback.”

His closing point suggested the pendulum swings back on its own.

If anything, it's like the more you work on something multiplayer for a long time it scratches that itch only to want to make something single-player again.

The comments land while FromSoftware's output is under outside scrutiny. The boss of parent company Kadokawa recently survived a shareholder vote on his future amid pressure from an activist investor who argues the company has failed to capitalise on Elden Ring's success. Elden Ring launched in 2022 and has sold 30 million copies; since then FromSoftware has shipped the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion in 2024 and the multiplayer spin-off Elden Ring Nightreign in 2025.

In June, Miyazaki addressed that pressure directly, insisting FromSoftware can still “freely make the kind of games we want to make without excessive interference.” On the question fans actually want answered, he said in December 2024 that the studio was not considering an Elden Ring 2, while declining to rule it out in future.

Miyazaki made the single-player remarks as part of a wider IGN interview covering the studio's partnership with Nintendo and future plans for The Duskbloods, conducted around the game's network test and hands-on preview.
