Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's pre-release beta will include a single-player campaign mission and Warzone alongside multiplayer, the first time all three have appeared in a Call of Duty test, Eurogamer reported after Activision detailed the line-up on August 14. Xbox announced the campaign inclusion on X, and the official Call of Duty account followed with a full breakdown of maps, modes and platforms.
The beta runs across two weekends. The early access period, August 21 to 25, is open to players who pre-order the game or gain entry through offers such as Discord Nitro and Call of Duty NEXT code giveaways, and is playable on PC via Steam and Battle.net, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It carries the campaign mission "Entrenched" plus six 6v6 multiplayer maps across nine modes.
What the first weekend includes
- Multiplayer maps: Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213, Cachette, Lotus and Kill Block
- Modes: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Search & Destroy, the previously unrevealed Inflation mode, Kill Block 10v10, 3v3 Gunfight and a Mobility Course
- Campaign: the mission "Entrenched", which Infinity Ward teased in a vignette showing a South Korean marine squad in an uphill offensive
The open beta follows from August 28 to September 1 with no pre-order requirement. It repeats the campaign mission and adds Warzone's new Resurgence map, Zodiac, which had been teased but never detailed, along with the combined-arms Ground War mode on Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium. Two further multiplayer modes, Hijack and Combat Outpost, are exclusive to the second weekend, and the Lotus map is swapped out for Lithium. Nintendo Switch 2 is supported for the open weekend only, because pre-orders on Nintendo's console do not open until later in the month.
Kill Block is the beta's headline map. Set at the fictional West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility, its modular battlegrounds reconfigure before every match, mashing together several older Call of Duty layouts to produce hundreds of possible combinations.
One notable absence is DMZ, the extraction mode Activision has positioned as a major selling point this year. Destructoid noted that it is missing from both weekends and will not be playable until release. Call of Duty NEXT, the showcase that precedes the beta, takes place remotely on August 21 hours before servers open, with more than 1,000 creators and community players streaming the game and a first look at Zodiac.
Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. It is the first entry in the series to appear on a Nintendo platform since 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts, the first since Ghosts to skip PS4 and Xbox One, and — unlike Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 — it will not launch directly into Xbox Game Pass.
