Modern Warfare 4 open beta ran 12 hours longer with double XP

Infinity Ward pushed the beta's close to 10 PM PT on September 1 and left double progression and weapon XP running until it shut down.

Activision extended the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 open beta by 12 hours before it closed. The test had been due to end on September 1 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, and instead ran until 10 PM PT that date, which was 1 AM ET on September 2, according to GameSpot and IGN reports published on September 1.

Developer Infinity Ward announced the change on its X account, and double progression XP and double weapon XP stayed active until the beta shut down. GameSpot reported that players who reached the beta's level cap of 30 earned a weapon blueprint, and that the extra hours gave them more room to get there.

Combat Outpost joined the beta on August 29

The extension followed an August 29 beta update that added Ground War: Combat Outpost, a mode Infinity Ward described as a reimagining of Domination for a larger-scale format, PCGamesN reported. It fields 24 players on each side across the bigger Wolves Stadium and Imjin Farmlands maps with infantry and vehicles, and captured outposts double as spawn points. The mode also carries escalating team rewards ranging from local UAVs to armored vehicle support. That patch went live on August 29 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST / 7pm CEST.

Infinity Ward said it was keeping the weapon updates in that patch minimal and asked players to keep reporting how the guns felt. Weapons carrying fewer than 60 rounds in reserve were given an extra magazine, or the equivalent where a magazine did not apply, so that players could stay in a fight longer before hunting for ammunition. The .50 GS, the game's take on the Desert Eagle, took a damage cut: its maximum damage within 20.3 meters dropped from 46 to 34, and its output past that range went from a flat 37 to 30 out to 44.4 meters and 27 beyond.

The same update made Kill Confirmed tags available for pickup as soon as they drop, with no delay, and widened the pickup radius. Infinity Ward also fixed Care Packages that sometimes failed to appear when called in, teammate dots that could stick to the mini-map, and visual problems that could follow a Snapshot Grenade hit.

Launch details

Modern Warfare 4 is due on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, with the single-player campaign unlocking on October 16 for players who preorder. It is the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform since 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts, and the first to skip last-generation consoles since that game. IGN reported that it will not be included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at launch. GameSpot noted that the release falls 34 days before Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives on November 19.
