Monster Hunter Wilds patch 1.042 makes Event Quests playable offline

Capcom's August 4 update opens all 25 Event and Challenge Quests to offline players and adds save transfers from the coming Prologue Demo.

Capcom is making Monster Hunter Wilds' Event and Challenge Quests playable offline in patch 1.042, an update set for August 4, Eurogamer reported. The missions are the game's rotating limited-time content and had previously required an online connection to accept.

Eurogamer described the quests as the game's sole live-service element. They rotate weekly and task players with taking down specific monsters under set conditions, and their rewards are sought after because they feed gear and equipment upgrades. Capcom has also used them to debut some of its rarer and more difficult monster encounters, which players who stayed offline could not reach at all.

After the update lands, all 25 Event and Challenge Quests in the game can be accepted without an online connection. The rotation itself is unchanged: quests remain available for a limited time before a new set replaces them, and Capcom returns everything to the rotation eventually. The Quest Counter will now list the currently live quests at the top. A quest named Just What the Doctor Ordered has been added and is likewise playable offline.

Save transfers from the Prologue Demo

The patch's other addition is support for save data transfers from the Prologue Demo, which launches a day after the update on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Capcom said more details about the demo would be announced later. Players who buy the full game after trying it can carry their save across, provided no save data already exists.

Part of a wider push on Wilds

Eurogamer placed the update inside a longer effort to change how Wilds is regarded. The game was an immediate top seller but lost players faster on Steam than any other Monster Hunter, and reception has been mixed to negative over problems ranging from performance to what many players felt was a lack of challenge. Its Steam user review rating recovered for a period before falling back to Mixed from Mostly Positive.

A permanent price reduction is scheduled for August 6, alongside new editions that consolidate the game's various add-ons — moves Eurogamer tied to the same push to bring in new players. The Wilds front had otherwise been quiet since Capcom announced the Ascendance expansion in June. That release is set for 2027, with details to follow over the coming months.
