Nintendo announced Nintendo Switch Sports Resort during its Nintendo Direct presentation on September 9. The game is set for release on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026, Dexerto reported.
It arrives four years after Nintendo Switch Sports, which was released in 2022 and carried forward the lineage of Wii Sports on earlier Nintendo hardware. The headline change this time is what Dexerto called a "fully open-world" design: rather than staying inside individual events, players can freely explore an island setting in between activities.
According to Dexerto, the reveal trailer showed twelve sports, among them table tennis, archery, basketball, skateboarding, flying, power cruising, sumo wrestling, bowling, golf, thumb wrestling and boxing; the outlet's report named eleven of the twelve without identifying the last. Several of those double as ways of getting around the island: the trailer showed players skateboarding, flying and riding a jet ski while chasing dolphins.
Exploration has objectives of its own as well. While roaming, players can search for hidden hibiscus flowers and collect photos that unlock information about different sightseeing spots around the island.
The game also introduces Island Crown, a new mode that pits players against seasoned champions as an additional challenge on top of the standard sports lineup.
