Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold more than 1 million copies on its first day of release, Capcom announced on September 7. The milestone took cumulative sales across the Onimusha series past 10 million units, Eurogamer, Dot Esports and IGN reported.
The game launched on September 4 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, according to Eurogamer. It is the first new Onimusha game in more than 20 years.
In its statement, Capcom credited the result to its marketing ahead of launch, citing multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions that it said widened awareness of the game among a broad range of players. The publisher also used the announcement to describe a wider strategy, IGN reported.
In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title.
Steam, reviews and comparisons
Capcom did not break the total down by platform. On Steam, the game peaked at 85,081 concurrent players, Eurogamer reported, citing SteamDB. Dot Esports reported that the game held scores of 85 on Metacritic and 86 on OpenCritic within days of release, and IGN's own review scored it 10/10.
Dot Esports noted that the first-day total beat the pace of Pragmata, which reached 1 million copies in its first two days on sale, a figure Eurogamer also reported. Eurogamer added that Capcom's biggest release of the year so far, Resident Evil Requiem, sold 5 million units in under a week.
The game arrived earlier than first planned. In July, Capcom brought its release forward from the previously announced September 25 date, days after saying it remained committed to that date, Eurogamer reported.
