Opera GX teases an Overwatch World Cup battle pass

Opera GX has teased a collaboration with Overwatch that would give players in-game rewards tied to the Overwatch World Cup, Esports.gg reports. The gaming browser announced the tie-in on social media on August 14, and said that installing Opera GX is how players will claim the rewards. Neither the browser maker nor the Overwatch esports team has said what the rewards are, or when they arrive.

What has actually been announced

According to the teaser, the collaboration lets players claim an Overwatch World Cup battle pass. That is the extent of the confirmed detail. Esports.gg notes that the teaser image carried silhouettes of Kiriko, Tracer and Vendetta, which may point to cosmetics for those heroes, but no cosmetic has been named and no unlock conditions have been published.

At the time Esports.gg published its report, neither Opera GX nor the team behind Overwatch esports had revealed anything further. The teaser gives no release date, no list of rewards and no indication of whether the battle pass is a separate track or an extension of an existing one, which leaves the substance of the promotion unresolved for now.

A reversal players noticed

The reaction from Overwatch players was less about the rewards than about the pairing. Esports.gg reports that many players questioned the collaboration and recalled that Opera GX had previously mocked Overwatch on social media, with accounts including Sombritos, ChristalRaine, ZyndelP and MajorTom_2GC among those registering surprise.

One community account, OWCavalry, characterised the tie-in as an enemies-to-lovers turn. The Overwatch World Cup is already running its own reward campaign alongside the tournament, and the Opera GX offer is being positioned as an additional route to in-game items rather than a replacement for it. Until either company follows the teaser with a full announcement, what players can actually claim, and what they have to do to claim it, remains unstated.
