Old School RuneScape adds adoptable dogs in September and plans a Bronzeman mode for next year

Jagex's first monthly features digest details A Ruff Situation, a subscriber-only rescue quest that ends with a treasure-sniffing puppy, plus an Ironman variant that unlocks Grand Exchange trading item by item.

Jagex has laid out plans for two long-requested additions to Old School RuneScape: adoptable dogs arriving in September, and a Bronzeman account mode that will not reach the game until sometime next year. Both features were detailed in the studio's first monthly digest of work in progress, MassivelyOP reports.

The dogs arrive attached to a new quest line called A Ruff Situation, scheduled for September. It tasks players with rescuing dogs scattered across the game world and helping to set up a dog shelter. Completing it unlocks the ability to adopt a puppy, which can then be raised into a working dog capable of sniffing out treasure for the player to dig up. Grown dogs can also be added to the menagerie in a player-owned house. The quest will be available to subscribers only.

Multiple dog pets have not previously been obtainable in the sandbox MMO, which is why the arrival is being treated as a headline addition rather than a routine content drop.

The second feature is Bronzeman mode, which sits between a standard account and Ironman. It applies Ironman-style trading restrictions, but allows players to buy and sell an item on the Grand Exchange once their character has already earned that item legitimately. In practice that means a Bronzeman has to obtain each item type once by playing before the game's central marketplace opens up for it, rather than being locked out of trading entirely as an Ironman is.

Jagex is weighing more than one version. The studio is considering an "official" Bronzeman alongside an "unbound" variant that folds PvP into the mode. Neither is imminent: none of the new account modes are set to arrive until sometime next year, well after the September quest.

The digest is the first entry in a planned monthly series covering features still in development, which gives Jagex a regular channel for flagging work like this before it is finished.
