Overwatch Reveals D.Mon, Its 53rd Hero, in an Animated Short

Overwatch has revealed its 53rd hero, D.Mon, in a new animated short titled "Tough Call". Destructoid reports that the character will launch as part of the game's next season, which begins on August 11.

The roughly two-and-a-half-minute short is set in the South Korean city of Busan and features D.Mon alongside D.Va and their MEKA Squad teammates Casino, King and Overlord as the group defends the city from an invasion. It is the first look at D.Mon in her mech, and the first time the squad has been shown operating together at this scale.

That mech, codenamed Beast, is described as large and red, carrying a sword in its right hand and a shield in its left. Destructoid frames the loadout as a clear departure from D.Va's mech, which is armed with dual cannons and no melee weapon — a difference that suggests a close-range role rather than the sustained fire D.Va provides.

A lore beat as well as a reveal

The short also advances the season's ongoing storyline. The squad is tasked with protecting both the city's civilians and an EMP device sought by Talon and its leader Vendetta, whom Destructoid identifies as the overarching villain of this year's narrative arc.

D.Mon chooses to shield civilians from Wrecking Ball — piloted by the genetically enhanced hamster Hammond — rather than guard the EMP device. Talon takes the device as a result, which Destructoid describes as the setup for the next stage of the story.

The choice is presented as a deliberate character beat rather than a setback: D.Mon weighs the device against the people in front of her, and the title of the short refers to that decision. Destructoid describes the outcome as setting up the next conflict in the storyline rather than closing one off.

The video continues a run of anime-styled shorts Blizzard has produced for the game, distinct in style from the CGI animated shorts the studio released in earlier years. Destructoid rates the two formats as comparable in quality and says the run has left it wanting a full-length animated series built on the game's fiction, rather than shorts released alongside each hero.
