Blizzard revealed Doctrine, a new support hero for Overwatch, during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on September 12, alongside reworks for Sombra and Roadhog and details of the game's fifth season. Polygon reported that Doctrine is the game's 54th hero and the ninth of 10 new heroes planned for Overwatch in 2026.
Doctrine is vampire-themed. PC Gamer described him as a vampire with a cyborg arm and mechanical bats, and Wowhead said his scepter heals allies and damages enemies while his drones support teammates. Polygon and IGN both reported that the developers describe him as having a high mechanical floor. The segment's cinematic, per Polygon, showed Doomfist working with agents including Sombra to free Doctrine as part of his effort to keep control of Talon, and IGN and MassivelyOP said the segment concluded Act 3 of the game's ongoing Reign of Talon storyline.
A limited-time Doctrine hero trial opened on September 12, both on the BlizzCon show floor and at home, and ran through September 14, according to Wowhead and MassivelyOP. Wowhead reported that Doctrine will be released with Season 5, which IGN and MassivelyOP said begins October 6. PC Gamer noted that no exact release date for the hero was given during the ceremony.
Polygon detailed Doctrine's kit from a hands-on at the show. His Eternal Scepter is a mid-range weapon that heals allies and damages enemies, and his Deliverance ultimate launches a swarm of drones that reduces enemy maximum health while granting allies overhealth. An Infuse ability adds a powerful effect to his next skill: his Shrouded Momentum dash gains free flight, his Invigorating Drones deploy to himself as well as an ally, and his scepter fires a larger piercing blast. Polygon said Doctrine officially joins the roster in Season 5.
Sombra moves to support
Overwatch director Aaron Keller announced the reworks, according to GameSpot and MassivelyOP. GameSpot, Polygon, PC Gamer, IGN and MassivelyOP all reported that Sombra is moving from the damage role to support, which Polygon noted is a rare change: only Doomfist and Symmetra have switched roles before. Polygon said Roadhog's rework is meant to make him more of a team player, and IGN quoted Blizzard franchise leaders describing a tank that "actually helps his team." GameSpot reported that Keller did not share specifics during the ceremony but said players would be far less annoyed by Roadhog's hook in particular. Specifics followed at the game's BlizzCon panel and in later coverage.
Dot Esports reported that Sombra's Hack becomes Hotfix, which heals a targeted ally over time and can still hack health packs and deployables, while Cyberspace replaces Virus with a projectile that creates a field healing allies and weakening enemies; she loses her Stealth passive but can still turn invisible after using Translocator, and EMP remains her ultimate. Destructoid quoted hero designer Scott Kennedy saying the move to support "allows you to sort of keep the core identity of the hero".
For Roadhog, Dot Esports reported that the rework removes his one-shot hook combo: the Scrap Gun now fires in two bursts and gains a Trash Compactor alt-fire that absorbs enemy projectiles and fires them back as an explosive ball. Destructoid said the ability can also launch Roadhog into the air for maneuverability, and quoted Kennedy saying the team wanted the hook combo to be "less frustrating" and to have "more counterplay".
Season 5 also adds Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, an escort map set in a prison that Polygon placed in Iceland and IGN described as volcanic, and brings back Dokiwatch cosmetics. Wowhead said the season also includes unvaulted battle passes. IGN reported that Blizzard mentioned another new hero for Season 6, and IGN and PC Gamer both said the next Overwatch Spotlight is scheduled for February 2027.
