The Overwatch World Cup returns with 16 teams in Busan and a BlizzCon final

The group stage runs August 20-23 at the Busan Esports Arena, with the top eight advancing to a single-elimination final in Anaheim on September 12-13.

The Overwatch World Cup returns in 2026 after several years off, with a group stage in Busan feeding a final at BlizzCon, Dot Esports reports. The tournament was previously an annual fixture but has taken multiple breaks over funding and a shift in focus toward the main esports circuit.

The 2026 edition is split into two stages, a live group stage and the finals. Sixteen national teams contest the group stage from August 20 to August 23 at the Busan Esports Arena, known as BRENA, in South Korea. Each of the four groups plays a single round robin in first-to-three series, and the top two from every group advance.

The groups are:

  • Group A: China, United States, Sweden, Japan
  • Group B: Saudi Arabia, Australia, Mexico, Great Britain
  • Group C: Canada, Germany, Thailand, Spain
  • Group D: France, South Korea, Denmark, Colombia

Each group therefore plays six matches, 24 in all across the four days. The schedule opens with Mexico against Great Britain and China against the United States, and closes on August 23 with Germany against Thailand, France against Colombia, Saudi Arabia against Great Britain and Australia against Mexico. France meets South Korea and the United States meets Sweden on August 21, with all times listed in CT.

The eight survivors meet at BlizzCon in Anaheim, California on September 12 and 13. That stage is a straight single-elimination bracket with no second chances, and the winner is crowned World Cup champion.

Matches stream on the event's official YouTube and Twitch channels. Blizzard has promised Twitch Drops throughout the tournament, along with in-game events for supporting particular teams and regions.

The World Cup is a standalone competition of teams representing their countries, distinct from OWCS, the circuit contested by organisation-backed rosters such as Team Liquid. There is no word yet on whether the event returns in 2027.
