Pantheon replaces Constitution and Charisma in attribute overhaul

Two attributes are being retired for Concentration and Presence as Visionary Realms realigns which stats each class wants.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen key art

Visionary Realms detailed a rework of Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen's core character attributes in a March 13 progress update, part of the Combat and Progression Update the studio has scheduled for the spring. The post followed the recent releases of the Ability Loadouts feature, the Nightfall Crypt and the Summoner rework, which the team said it is still monitoring for feedback.

The problems being solved

The studio laid out what it wants attributes to do: give each stat a distinct effect on performance that need not be identical across classes, leave every class caring about several stats, and preserve genuine choices without letting one build be best at everything. It also wants item bonuses to be broadly useful to any class that can equip the item — the team's own analogy is that a necromancer and a wizard might each prefer a slightly different robe while both still gaining something real from either.

Measured against that, the team identified three failures. Too many classes have optimal attribute builds that diverge sharply from other classes filling the same role, so shared gear does not actually get shared. New players are frequently unsure which attributes their class wants, or why particular stats are attached to particular abilities. And two attributes, Constitution and Charisma, carry little meaning at all, with previous attempts to fix them having added confusion rather than removing it.

What replaces them

The update makes four changes. Constitution is removed and replaced by a new attribute called Concentration. Charisma is removed and replaced by Presence. The baseline effects of every attribute are reworked. And the attributes tied to class abilities are realigned so classes within the same archetype or role line up better with one another.

The team published the passive benefits each stat will carry after the change. Strength governs melee auto-attack damage and carry capacity; Dexterity covers ranged auto-attack damage, parry chance and melee critical chance; Agility feeds dodge chance and base armor class; Stamina raises the health pool. Concentration, defined as the ability to stay focused, resists spell pushback — the chance that taking a hit lengthens a cast — and reduces or resists some hostile control effects such as stuns and silences. Intellect and Wisdom both add mana and improve spell critical chance for some classes. Presence covers vendor pricing, faction gains, utility buff duration and the strength of charm and mesmerize effects.

Visionary Realms acknowledged that those baseline benefits are not equally valuable to every class, and said attributes will also scale the performance of class abilities. Strength boosts melee attacks that depend on force, while Dexterity boosts melee and ranged attacks that depend on precision. Stamina strengthens abilities built around shields, armor and absorbing or blocking damage, and Agility strengthens avoidance-based defenses along with reaction and movement abilities. Intellect raises the power of some damaging spells rooted in elemental or arcane manipulation.

The stated result is that items become useful to more classes than they are now, and that picking up an unfamiliar class and working out how to gear it gets easier. The team said classes will still want to raise multiple attributes and will still face real choices, but that those choices should be easier to reason about.
