Grinding Gear Games has rolled out patch 0.5.3 for Path of Exile 2's Runes of Aldur league, adjusting Delirium encounters, Grand Expedition mechanics, and endgame loot as the studio continues shaping the game toward its full 1.0 release later in 2026.

Expedition Gets Tuned Down

The Grand Expedition endgame mode is losing some of its explosive potential. Players can now place a maximum of 15 Explosives per run, down from the previous cap of 20, trimming how aggressively maps can be cleared in a single pass. Balancing the change, the number of Remnants available in a Grand Expedition now scales up with the tier of Waystone used, giving higher-tier maps more to work with even as the explosive ceiling drops. GGG has also tightened the screws on map farming. Waystones that have already been run once now grant 50% less experience on repeat attempts, stacking on top of the existing penalty to item rewards for revisited maps. The change pushes players toward using fresh Waystones rather than looping the same map layout for efficiency.

Delirium Encounters Get a Rebalance

Delirium is the biggest focus of this patch. Simulacrums — the endgame items that trigger concentrated Delirium encounters — now begin at 100% Delirious and can scale up to 200%. For open-world Delirium encountered through Fog in early endgame content, the scaling has been cut in half, making those encounters noticeably less punishing for players who haven't yet geared up for the league's toughest content. That said, players chasing maximum difficulty haven't lost the option: using three Delirium Tablets together restores Delirium scaling to its previous, more aggressive values. Grinding Gear Games has also made Delirium Fog pause during Summoning Circle encounters, preventing the fog's escalating danger from stacking on top of what are already demanding fights. Alongside the scaling changes, the update addresses a batch of Delirium-related bugs, including issues with fog spreading unpredictably across maps and problems with monster spawns inside Delirium encounters.

Loot Tables Get a Boost

Reward structures are shifting across several systems. The Vessel of Kulemak now drops Ancient Jawbones, Ancient Ribs, and Ancient Collarbones, adding new materials to its loot pool. Grand Expedition's chest rewards have also been improved, with better odds at Currency, Unique Items, and Waystones dropping from those containers. On top of that, Runic Modifiers on monsters have been doubled in most cases, meaning players will run into these empowered enemies more frequently across endgame content.

Building Toward 1.0

Grinding Gear Games has positioned the Runes of Aldur league and its accompanying patches as groundwork for Path of Exile 2's full 1.0 launch, expected later in 2026. The 0.5.3 update's mix of nerfs, bug fixes, and reward adjustments fits that pattern — refining systems that have been live since early access rather than piling on wholesale new content. With 0.5.3, Grinding Gear Games continues its incremental approach to smoothing out Path of Exile 2's endgame loop, tightening Expedition's pace, softening early Delirium difficulty while preserving a high-end option for veterans, and sweetening loot in the process. Expect more balance passes of this kind as the Runes of Aldur league runs its course on the way to 1.0.
