Peak ends post-launch support with the Final Ascent update

Aggro Crab and Landfall add the Gloom and The Citadel biomes on August 11, retiring Caldera and Kiln.

Peak is finishing its post-launch run. Aggro Crab and Landfall have announced the Final Ascent, the co-op climbing game’s last major update, which arrives on August 11 — just over a year after launch, Rock Paper Shotgun reports.

The update adds two new biomes. Gloom is described as an eerie purple hellscape, and The Citadel as the medieval dungeon tower it leads up to. Both will cycle into rotation in place of two existing maps, the heat-themed Caldera and Kiln. The swap keeps the map count steady rather than growing it, so the two retiring biomes leave rotation as the new pair enters.

Closing out the story

The studios say working through the pair completes the narrative thread the game opened at release, in which players set out to rescue a scout master who believes he has formed an unsettling link to the island Peak takes place on. RPS notes a shot near the end of the announcement trailer showing a hand reaching out, suggesting the final ascent involves something to climb away from as well as something to climb.

GameSpot’s coverage of the same announcement leads on the dungeon, framing The Citadel as the danger the update is built around and the reason to come back for a last run.

A year of climbing

Peak arrived last summer into a crowded field of co-op games built to generate stories among groups of friends rather than to be mastered, and it found an audience quickly. RPS’s own writing on the game has focused on the emergent chaos of a run: a dwindling stamina bar, friends falling out of frame, and the improvised cruelty of testing whether a mushroom is edible on somebody else. The Final Ascent is the studios’ last addition to that, and the announcement was made through the game’s Steam page. No further major content has been announced beyond it.
