Persona 5 is coming to Fortnite. Developer Atlus has teased the crossover, which Polygon reports will form part of Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, officially titled Override.
The tease is brief. A nine-second clip posted by Atlus shows the Persona 5 protagonist, Joker, running through a futuristic map before turning to the camera. Neither Atlus nor Epic Games has said what form the crossover will take, and Polygon reports that further details on the season are due from Epic at a later date.
Override is a Gaming Legends-themed season, and Persona 5 is not the only guest. Sonic the Hedgehog was teased for the same season earlier in the week.
A decade of crossovers
The timing lines up with the tenth anniversary of Persona 5's release. In the decade since, the game has grown into a franchise of its own inside the wider Persona series, picking up an updated edition, an anime adaptation and a run of spinoff titles. Polygon reports that Epic Games will confirm what shape the crossovers take when it details the season.
It has also become a fixture of live-service crossovers, which has produced a running piece of fan superstition. The so-called Persona 5 curse holds that a live-service game that collaborates with the RPG shuts down within a year. Polygon lists Star Ocean: Anamnesis, Dragalia Lost, Sword Art Online: Memory Defrag and Nier Reincarnation as the cases fans point to.
The pattern is not universal. Overwatch, Granblue Fantasy and Another Eden have all run Persona 5 collaborations and are still operating, and Polygon notes that the more likely explanation is scale: Persona 5 is a large enough property that many games want a crossover, including some already close to the end of their lives. Asked whether the curse might reach Fortnite, Polygon's answer was that it probably will not.
