Pirate101 adds The Trail Goes Cold, its first Polaris storyline chapter

KingsIsle's update continues the MMORPG's main story, adds a Privateer companion named Oleg, and revives several features that had gone dark.

KingsIsle has released The Trail Goes Cold, a story update for the family-friendly MMORPG Pirate101, the studio said in a press release reported this week by MassivelyOP.

The update continues the game's main story with the first part of a new storyline set in Polaris, a region KingsIsle describes in terms of its climate and its place in the setting's history.

According to the studio, the chapter opens after the reveal of a new contender in the Race to El Dorado. Pirates must seek help from old friends and foes as they follow Oksana's trail to the far reaches of the Spiral, a journey that begins with One-Eyed Jack in Flotsam before players set sail for Polaris.

Once there, KingsIsle says players can explore the capital city, visit its tavern and local vendors, face new enemies, earn new rewards and venture into a frozen wilderness where, by the studio’s account, rumours place an abominable beast waiting to be discovered.

A new companion and restored systems

The update also adds Oleg, a Privateer storyline companion the studio casts as a revolutionary figure who joins the crew to help against the dangers of Polaris.

Alongside the new content, KingsIsle says several features that had been unavailable have been revived:

Restored features

  • Stormgate travel and ship docking
  • Team Up Kiosk functionality
  • The Transportaler
  • The Midnight Moon Taverne and Cellar

KingsIsle has also published a trailer for the update. The studio did not say in the material MassivelyOP quoted how many further parts the Polaris storyline will run to, or when the next one is due.

MassivelyOP, which reported the release, described Pirate101 as a long-running kid-friendly pirate MMORPG that rarely receives updates, and identified KingsIsle as a studio owned by Gamigo.
