Pokémon Go gives all players a perfect Mewtwo after Times Square

Scopely is handing out a hundo Mewtwo with the anniversary background that only invited influencers and press could earn in July.

Pokémon Go developer Scopely is giving every player a Mewtwo with perfect stats and a special anniversary background, Polygon reports, after the invite-only event that opened the game’s 10th anniversary celebrations drew criticism from fans.

That event, held in New York City’s Times Square in July and inspired by the game’s 2016 announcement trailer, awarded a perfect-stat Mewtwo with a special background. It was open only to influencers, content creators and press, and some attendees listed their variants on eBay for between $500 and $5,000.

How to claim the hundo Mewtwo

All players were able to catch Mewtwo in raids during the global Pokémon Go Fest on July 11 and 12, but perfect-stat Pokémon, known as hundos, are extremely rare. Improving the odds means running more raids, which in turn means buying extra passes.

The new route is a short timed research task: catch 10 Pokémon and power up a Pokémon 10 times. The reward Mewtwo arrives with its third Mega Level already unlocked, allowing it to become Mega Mewtwo Y, the form Times Square attendees battled and caught. Players also receive a Master Ball, which catches any Pokémon with a single throw.

Polygon describes the timed research as very simple, and neither step requires a raid pass. What it hands over is:

  • A Mewtwo with perfect stats and a special anniversary background
  • Its third Mega Level unlocked, for Mega Mewtwo Y
  • A Master Ball, which catches any Pokémon in one throw

The Times Square background returns later

Scopely has said the Mewtwo carrying the Times Square background will be made available again at some point in the future, likely as part of another Go Fest event. Players who were in Times Square will receive a Mewtwo with different stats.

Go Fest ends on September 6 with a Mega Finale, which Polygon says offers further opportunities to catch Mewtwo with a special background.
