Season 15 of Ranked Battles in Pokémon Legends: Z-A will allow only Water-type Pokémon, Polygon reports. The season begins on August 6 and runs until August 27.
The game changes its online rules with each season, and the restrictions have been getting more specific. Season 13 barred all legendary and mythical Pokémon from Ranked Battles; Season 14 narrowed the pool to Flying-types. Season 15 applies the same treatment to Water.
Which Pokémon are eligible
Entries are drawn from two Pokédexes: the base game's Lumiose Pokédex and the Hyperspace Pokédex added by the Mega Dimension DLC.
- Lumiose Pokédex: the Totodile, Squirtle and Froakie starter lines, plus Magikarp and Gyarados, Binacle and Barbaracle, Staryu and Starmie, Panpour and Simipour, Vaporeon, the Slowpoke line, Carvanha and Sharpedo, Skrelp, and Clauncher and Clawitzer
- Hyperspace Pokédex: Rotom Wash, Dondozo, Tatsugiri, regular Qwilfish, the Mudkip line, Feebas and Milotic, Wimpod and Golisopod, Volcanion, Keldeo and Kyogre
Kyogre’s presence on that list is the open question. Polygon notes that players are likely to be limited to one Kyogre per team, but that Game Freak and The Pokémon Company have not confirmed the restriction.
Team levels do not carry over into competition. Every Pokémon is set to level 50 for online battles, so the work of raising a squad outside Ranked Battles does not translate into a statistical edge inside them.
Format and rewards
Ranked Battles put four trainers against one another using the game's real-time combat rather than turn-based exchanges. Each trainer fields three Pokémon and scores a point for every opposing Pokémon knocked out, and Mega Evolution remains central to winning.
Rewards follow the pattern of previous seasons, with Fresh Water and assorted Feathers on offer. As in Season 14, ranking up from Rank Y through Rank S yields Mega Stones: Greninjite, Delphoxite, Chesnaughtite, Baxcalibrite, Sceptilite, Swampertite and Blazikenite respectively.
