Pokemon Unite is being cut from the Championship Series and will no longer count toward the Pokemon World Championships starting in 2027, Play! Pokemon confirmed in a Wednesday, July 15 announcement, though the title isn't losing its competitive scene entirely.
Unite Steps Away From Worlds
Pokemon Unite joined the Pokemon World Championships lineup in 2022, and the 2026 season marks its last run as part of that event. This year's Championship Series distributed more than $1 million in total prize money, including a $500,000 pool reserved for the World Championships event itself. Starting in 2027, Unite will be removed from the Championship Series structure entirely and will no longer appear at Worlds. Rather than shutting down organized Unite play, The Pokemon Company is spinning the title off into its own dedicated tournament: Pokemon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo. The new event opens with Online Regional Qualifiers, tentatively scheduled to begin in November 2026, feeding into a Final Tournament set for late March 2027 in Tokyo, Japan. Up to 32 teams will compete in person at the finals. Prize money will be on offer at both the qualifying and final stages, though exact figures for either purse have not been released. Teams that win their Regional Qualifiers will earn tournament invitations along with travel awards to attend the Tokyo finals in person. The shift effectively hands Unite a competitive structure entirely separate from the rest of the franchise's esports calendar. It is not yet clear how the Aeos Crown's prize pool will compare to the $500,000 Unite competitors were chasing at the 2026 World Championships, since neither the qualifier nor finals purses have been disclosed at this stage.
A Separate Hardware Shake-Up for VGC
The Unite announcement lands alongside a separate policy shift affecting a different part of the competitive calendar. A newly outlined device policy for 2027 Video Game Championships play will limit competitors to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 hardware; phones and tablets are not listed as eligible tournament devices. The restriction stands out given how Pokemon Champions, the game at the center of VGC play, first reached players. Champions debuted on Switch and Switch 2 on April 8, 2026, then expanded to iOS and Android on June 17, 2026, with cross-platform play connecting all versions of the game. That mobile access will not extend to sanctioned tournament play, however, since competitive use will require console hardware regardless of platform. The Pokemon Company has said a separate device policy specifically for the 2027 Pokemon World Championships will be announced at a later date. With Unite carving out its own Aeos Crown circuit and VGC tightening its hardware requirements, Pokemon's 2027 competitive calendar is shaping up to look considerably different from the season that just wrapped.
