Level-5 has dated Professor Layton and the New World of Steam for December 10, ending a wait that stretched well past the game's originally planned release. The date was announced during the September 2026 Nintendo Direct, Polygon reported.
The puzzle-adventure game will not be a Nintendo exclusive despite the venue. It is scheduled for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam.
A 13-year gap
New World of Steam is the first new mainline entry in the series since Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013 as the closing chapter of the prequel trilogy. In the years between, Level-5 kept the character in circulation through spin-offs and crossovers: Layton Brothers: Mystery Room, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy.
The game was announced in 2023 and was expected at the time to arrive in 2024. The date slipped, and long stretches without new information followed — Polygon reported that fans had begun to expect the date to be pushed back yet again. A trailer in April confirmed the 2026 window was intact, but no date accompanied it.
Setting
Per Nintendo's announcement, the game returns Layton and his assistant Luke to a story set at the dawn of the industrial age. After receiving a letter from Luke, the professor travels to Steam Bison, described as a rapidly developing American town beset by mysterious incidents.
The December 10 date places the game at the end of the 2026 calendar that Level-5 committed to in April.
