Project Ascension shuts its WoW realms on September 4 after Blizzard deal

The classless World of Warcraft private server will close every emulated realm following what its team calls a "mutual agreement" with Blizzard.

Project Ascension, one of the largest World of Warcraft private server networks, will shut down all of its emulated realms on September 4 after reaching what its team describes as a "mutual agreement" with Blizzard.

Ascension project lead 'Dutch' announced the closure in a post to the server's official Discord. PCGamesN reported that the realms go offline at 7pm PT on September 4, 2026.

It has been almost 10 years since Ascension emulated WoW realms began, and the final chapter of this particular journey is coming to an end.

Support will stay active until the last day of the shutdown, and MassivelyOP reported that all remaining content on the timeline will be released and supported before the deadline. Once the realms close, PCGamesN reported, all WoW-related content will be removed from the website and Ascension's social media accounts. The team says development will then shift entirely to "something new, unrelated to WoW or any Blizzard game", with the site, the social accounts and the Ascension launcher repurposed for that project.

The lawsuit behind the closure

MassivelyOP reported that Blizzard began pursuing Ascension in court in June, with a suit accusing the project of infringing the World of Warcraft IP under the DMCA, pirating the game, and taking in "millions of dollars" from sales of its cash-shop currency. Wowhead reported the sequence as a cease-and-desist in June followed by a summons request later the same month.

Because Ascension's servers were reportedly hosted by a Russian company under United States sanctions, MassivelyOP noted many players had assumed the project was insulated and would not settle the way Turtle WoW did.

A decade of classless WoW

Ascension began in 2016 and built its reputation on a classless approach to the MMO, letting players assemble characters from abilities and talents drawn across every class. PCGamesN reported its realms centred on Vanilla, Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King, alongside a 'wildcard' realm that hands players random selections of abilities. Its most recent project, Conquest of Azeroth, added 21 custom classes derived from Warcraft lore, each with three specialisations.

The closure follows Blizzard's settlement with Turtle WoW earlier this year — that team has since said it will build an original MMO — and Stormforge's agreed shutdown in April. Wowhead noted the timing puts Ascension's final day days before BlizzCon 2026 on September 12 and 13.
