Rainbow Six Tactics was revealed during gamescom Opening Night Live: a turn-based, single-player tactics game set in the Rainbow Six universe, coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC.
Players take the mantle of Six, commander of the Rainbow unit, leading squads of up to four Operators on high-stakes assignments around the world — running the job from HQ preparation through to tactical execution in the field. You select which missions to take, assemble the right Operator combination, and resolve the objective in turn-based play.
The roster is 15 Operators, all pulled from Rainbow Six Siege, including Ash, Sledge, Nokk and Montagne. Each brings their signature gear, unique abilities and a distinct skill tree, which creative director Elie Benhamou said is one of the clearest links back to Siege.
Rainbow Six games all share a common tactical core: intel, planning, high-stakes decision-making, and elite Operators with distinct roles. So, transitioning from FPS to turn-based gameplay was smooth and natural for us, as we could keep all these elements while shifting the players’ perspective and pace of actions.
The campaign carries dozens of possible missions across diverse locations, each with its own challenge type — hostage rescue, bomb disposal, target elimination. Between missions, players train Operators, review gathered intelligence and strengthen the squad's overall capabilities before the next deployment.
Siege's destruction carries over too. Walls can be broken through to create new lines of sight, destroy enemy cover and open fresh points of entry. Tactics layers on a feature called The Breach, a synchronised assault that breaks the turn-based rhythm of combat and lets every active Operator move at once as they storm a new area, combining their abilities with environmental destruction.
Like Siege, Rainbow Six Tactics puts strategic planning and high-stakes decision-making at the center of the experience. But one of the most visible connections of course revolves around our playable characters.
Benhamou said the squad-building is meant to produce the same combinations Siege players already know: the 15 recruitable Operators “all feature their signature gear and abilities in Rainbow Six Tactics, which means players can combine their strengths to create similar — and very satisfying — squad synergies.” The goal, he said, was to “translate the tension and depth of Siege's gameplay into another style of gameplay while staying true to what makes the franchise unique,” and to make sure Tactics “would really have the look and feel of an authentic Rainbow Six game.”
Xbox Wire's announcement pointed players to wishlist the game on the Xbox Store ahead of its release on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC.
