Rockstar details GTA 6's reactive NPCs, body changes and social feeds

A Dazed cover story with senior Rockstar developers confirms lifestyle-driven character models, fluid protagonist switching and working in-game social media.

Rockstar Games has confirmed a set of Grand Theft Auto 6 systems through a Dazed cover story in which senior developers described a Leonida that reacts to how players move through it. The game is due on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 19, 2026.

The studio told the magazine that the open world responds to player behaviour rather than ignoring it. Carrying a rifle in public prompts a reaction from the surrounding crowd, and NPCs are built to register whether a player is walking, running or driving erratically. Rockstar said the population of Leonida spans different ages, heights and body types, with tattoos, piercings, cosmetic surgery and clothing varying by area, so that residents of Vice City's Little Cuba look and dress differently from people around Mount Kalaga National Park.

Diet, exercise and sleep change how Jason and Lucia look

The body-transformation systems Rockstar built for Red Dead Redemption 2 return in a wider form. Food affects the weight of protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, exercise visibly builds and tones muscle, and long stretches away from a bed — hiding from police, or several days into a bender — alter their faces. Haircuts, outfits, fitness, food and sleep all feed into how the pair look rather than sitting behind the scenes as invisible statistics. GameSpot framed the arrangement as the return of a Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas feature.

We want to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters.

Switching between the two protagonists

Players can run Jason and Lucia as a pair or send them out separately, and control moves between them during missions and in free roam. Rockstar's example has Jason driving along a highway while Lucia uses the in-game phone from the passenger seat; when a police chase starts, the player can move between steering and firing at pursuers through the window. The pair share vehicles such as jet skis, with animations that change to reflect the state of their relationship, and the studio said choices involving the two carry consequences that run deeper than the morality and Honor systems in its earlier games.

Leonida also carries functioning social media. Players can browse feeds through the in-game phone, and the rise of the rap duo Real Dimez plays out across viral posts. Several of the systems described had previously surfaced through retailer listings and leaks; Dexerto reported that the Dazed piece confirms working feeds and viral storylines without corroborating every leaked detail, including earlier claims that the networks would let players track influencers, find events and uncover secret side quests.

Rockstar also described the scale of the team behind the game. IGN reported that the studio has more than doubled in headcount since Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018, when it employed roughly 2,000 people, and that a Los Angeles office works almost solely on NPCs. Miami stylist Jillian Carr was hired in 2023 to build what the company calls a fashion ecosystem, telling the magazine that Vice City is built around vanity and that trend cycles there turn over quickly. Racecar drivers worked on vehicle handling, and more than 50 street artists produced murals for the map.

The interviews landed in the middle of a run of unauthorised gameplay leaks that have circulated combat, driving, flying, stores, nightclubs, radio stations, map sections and parts of the prologue. Rockstar addressed the breach in an August 26 social media post that called the leaks "heartbreaking for our team" and asked players to "wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19". Its Extended Look presentation premiered on Netflix the following day.
