The final hearing in the employment tribunal between Rockstar Games and 31 workers it dismissed in October 2025 began on September 10 at the Glasgow Tribunals Centre in Scotland. The Independent Workers’ union of Great Britain, which represents the former staff, held a rally outside the venue as proceedings opened.
The case turns on why the workers were fired. Rockstar says they were dismissed for gross misconduct after sharing confidential company information; the IWGB says they were targeted for union membership and activity, and that the dismissals were unlawful because they came without a disciplinary process or a right of appeal. IGN reports that 34 staff were dismissed in total, 31 in the UK and three in Canada.
Rockstar issued a fresh statement to IGN as the hearing began.
Rockstar Games' position has been clear and consistent throughout. Individuals across the UK and Canada were dismissed for gross misconduct following the sharing of confidential company information, not because of alleged trade union membership or activity. We reject the claims and will defend them vigorously before the tribunal.
What the workers are seeking
The IWGB is asking the tribunal to find that the dismissals were unfair, and to order either reinstatement or compensation. In June an earlier tribunal ruled that the fired developers could bring blacklisting claims against Rockstar as part of this hearing, Rock Paper Shotgun reports.
IGN reports the union’s account of the day itself: staff were called into meetings, told they were being fired with immediate effect and escorted from the building, while those not in the office were informed in phone calls of around two minutes before being locked out of their accounts. The IWGB also alleges one dismissed worker left the UK for Australia after Rockstar withdrew his work visa and reported him to the Home Office without an opportunity to appeal.
Rachel Crawford, a former Rockstar programmer who worked on Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 and was among those dismissed, closed the rally with a speech recorded by IWGB Game Workers co-founder Austin Kelmore.
On October 30 2025, I was fired by Rockstar Games. I was fired without warning and without even being given a clear answer as to what it was I’d done to deserve it. Within minutes, I was out the door, feeling humiliated and ashamed.
IWGB union president Alex Marshall said the union hopes the hearing will "bring the truth to light", and framed it as a chance to look behind the scenes of GTA 6 as the game reaches the public. Jason Lewis, another dismissed worker and IWGB member, said in a union press release that the group had "fought tooth and nail to get to this point", both for themselves and to draw a line for employers.
The hearing is scheduled to run until October 16, roughly five weeks. Grand Theft Auto 6 is due on consoles on November 19. The fired workers have asked supporters not to boycott the game, pointing instead to the union’s fundraising campaign and merchandise. Remaining Rockstar staff have formed the Rockstar Games Workers Union and are seeking recognition from the company.
