Rust's August force wipe ties map features to a new Power Plant item

Facepunch is testing a Heavy Fuse item that gates ten map systems behind the Power Plant, and solo players say the change favours large groups.

Rust's monthly force wipe arrives on Thursday, August 6 at 2pm ET, and the update accompanying it introduces an item that makes the Power Plant monument central to a large share of the map's systems. Players who tested the changes on the game's Staging Branch have questioned what that means for those playing alone.

Facepunch uses the Staging Branch to trial features ahead of each wipe, and Polygon reports the studio has spent the past week testing changes aimed at the game's main monuments. The features remain subject to change before Thursday.

What the Heavy Fuse unlocks

The update adds an item called the Heavy Fuse, which players must collect to make the Power Plant generate electricity. Powering the plant then enables a set of systems elsewhere on the map:

  • Power drawn from roadside electrical poles
  • Roadside water-pumping pipes
  • The Satellite Crash event
  • An increased airdrop rate at Airfield
  • Summoning the CH47 to Airfield
  • An Oil Rig switch that toggles the oil pump at Dome
  • Crude oil extraction at Dome
  • The car lift at Oxum's Gas Station
  • The freezer at the Supermarket
  • Increased recycler efficiency

The solo player objection

Because so much now depends on the Power Plant, testers expect organised groups to fortify the monument and deny access to it. Polygon reports that players fear clans will wall off and roof the site to keep others away from its electricity.

The objection is also about labour. A clan can station one player at the Power Plant, send others to each Oil Rig, and assign another to extract crude oil at Dome, completing the chain in parallel. A solo player has to travel the same route alone, under fire, and before the Heavy Fuses powering the plant run out. Polygon notes the same problem persists on solo-only servers, where the puzzles remain long even without the threat of being shot.

Discussion has run on Reddit and X through the week, with players describing how a slow start compounds: stronger teams claim monuments early, and solo players can be raided before reaching a Tier 2 workbench.

People complain because recent updates shifted the balance so far to clans that it's actually just stupid.

The reaction is not unanimous. Polygon quotes other players who read the change as a developer broadening its audience, and others who argue the game grew on the backs of solo and duo players before larger groups arrived. Players will see the final version of the update when servers wipe on Thursday.
