Silent Hill: Townfall will ship with five endings, director says

Screen Burn’s Jon McKellan says the endings turn on subtle player behaviour rather than explicit branching choices.

Silent Hill: Townfall will have five endings, Polygon reports from a preview event held in Los Angeles earlier this month. The count matches 2025’s Silent Hill f, which also shipped with five, one of them comedic; the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake went further with eight, five of which are only reachable on a second playthrough.

Townfall is being developed by Screen Burn Interactive rather than the teams behind those two games. Polygon’s hands-on describes tension-building yes-or-no prompts — whether to open a door, whether to open a box — presented with a red selection icon, the kind of framing that usually signals a branching path.

Not an A/B choice

Writer and director Jon McKellan declined to confirm whether those prompts create alternate routes, but described the game’s overall structure as something short of an open one.

I would say the game is fairly… we refer to it as, like, ‘wide linear.’ You’re going on your journey, but there’s a little bit of deviation as you go.

McKellan told Polygon that the ordering of some sections can vary depending on how a player approaches them, which is what keeps the game from feeling on-rails. The endings, he said, are decided by something less legible than a menu prompt: how the player conducts themselves as protagonist Simon across the whole game, rather than by any single decision.

By that account the visible yes-or-no moments are closer to atmosphere than to branch points. McKellan described the inputs to an ending as "very subtle" and said that the developers read a player’s handling of specific moments as a statement about what kind of player they are, and how that carries through Simon.

Release

Silent Hill: Townfall is due on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC on September 24. Whether the five endings are weighted evenly, or whether some require a second run in the manner of the Silent Hill 2 remake, has not been detailed.
