The SimCity 4 Network Addon Mod, known to the community simply as NAM, has released update 50. The mod is a comprehensive overhaul of the game's transportation and infrastructure networks, combining key fixes with a large set of extra build pieces - overpasses, intersections, on-ramps, roundabouts and more. It began life a year after SimCity 4's 2003 launch and is still going more than 20 years later.
The Eternal Commuter Loop is finally solved
The headline fix addresses the Eternal Commuter Loop, a problem that has plagued modders since launch. It is a fault in regional pathfinding across city boundaries in certain layouts that causes Sims to bounce between locations looking for work without ever taking a job. Zone demand collapses, traffic climbs to unsustainable levels, and the local economy falls apart.
Until now the only workaround was to avoid building layouts that gave commuters the chance to loop between locations. NAM 50 resolves it by blocking specific neighbor-to-neighbor routes while allowing the rest to run normally.
A required DLL changes what the mod can do - and where it runs
NAM 50 is the first version to depend on the NAM DLL, a separate collection of code that has to be installed manually alongside the mod. That dependency unlocks the release's other improvements: override networks are described as "much more stable," elements that previously needed a one-tile gap between them can now be placed adjacent, streets can be dragged diagonally, slope tolerances are improved, and tunnels can be built with the street network.
The DLL also let the team gut the codebase, reducing it "by almost 90% and by more than ten million lines, making it easier to maintain and reducing the chance of bugs." Players should see a substantial reduction in city load times at launch, and the old 4GB RAM patch used in past iterations is no longer needed.
The trade-off is compatibility. NAM 50 does not run on macOS or with old disc editions of the game - it is limited to digital Windows editions. The more compact NAM Lite package still works on those platforms as normal.
Elsewhere the update clears up sinkhole-related bugs, improves roundabout stability, adds extra intersection layouts, and introduces keyboard shortcuts for every network type. NAM 50 is available to download now, with additional documentation on the mod's standalone website; it requires SimCity 4 Deluxe, or SimCity 4 plus the Rush Hour expansion.
