Mega Crit is slowing the release cadence of Slay the Spire 2 updates in order to work on larger additions, the studio said in its August newsletter. PCGamesN reports that the developer is actively building an alternative Act Two zone and the next playable character, but that it will be "at least a month until any of it hits the beta branch."
The roguelike deckbuilder entered early access in March and has been updated on a bi-weekly schedule since. Mega Crit said that cadence "has allowed us to cross quite a few features and content off our to-do list" and let the team be "more dynamic and experimental when introducing changes." The drawback, the studio said, is that piecemeal drops make it harder to invest the time needed for "the bigger, more impactful content that many players are most eager for."
The end of August also marks the studio's annual team break, so there will be no scheduled update on August 27. "In order to bring you this much-anticipated content, we will be shifting our updates to be a bit further apart, at least for a while," Mega Crit wrote. "We can't guarantee the exact pace or if said pace will be regular, but we'll continue to keep you updated."
What the studio is working on
The alternate Act Two will be randomly swapped in for the Hive, mirroring the Underdocks and Overgrowth split that already exists in Act One. Experimental game modes are also in development alongside the new character.
In a question-and-answer section, co-founder Casey Yano addressed several long-running requests. On difficulty, he said the team's "general thought has been that Ascension 10 is close to the highest difficulty we have," noting that the larger character roster would make grinding out a full set of Ascension 20 wins "quite a chore." He added that the gradual rollout of further modes and regions should give the studio a clearer picture of how to approach higher difficulty.
Yano ruled out stacking multiple enchantments on a single card, citing the risk of runs snowballing.
We want our players to experience deckbuilding rather than cardbuilding.
Yano also said the team hopes to add alternative outfits or recolours to help tell characters apart in multiplayer, while cautioning that "we're a small team" and that the feature is not a high priority. Steam Achievements are planned for the full 1.0 release, and touchscreen support is unlikely to arrive before what he called the push for mobile ports.
Patch 0.111.0 is live now on the game's beta branch. It reworks Defect's Hyperbeam and Ironclad's Expect a Fight, applies buffs and nerfs across all five current classes, and adds new idle animations that show when a hero is at low health.
