WoW players crack Patch 12.1's first secret with a five-player ritual in the Altar of Fangs

The hidden Slitherfang battle pet is awarded only on Mythic difficulty, and the NPC despawns the moment five players have claimed it.

The first secret in World of Warcraft's Patch 12.1 has been solved. The WoW Secret Finding & Collections Discord found a hidden battle pet, Slitherfang, inside the patch's new dungeon, the Altar of Fangs, Wowhead reports. The pet is described as a “tenacious, fierce, and positively adorable” survivor rescued from the altar, and claiming it requires a full group of five players to perform a ritual that only works on the dungeon's Mythic difficulty.

Gathering the reagents

After a group clears to the first boss, interactable objects appear around the poison waterfalls near Rav'i. One player must pick up a Ritual Reagent while the other four take Reversal Charms, all of which are scattered around the poison waterfalls in Rav'i's arena.

Enacting the ritual

Past the dungeon's second boss, the group finds an Ascendent Serpent surrounded by four poisonous totems. The surrounding trash has to be killed, but the totems themselves must not be interacted with. Instead, the four players carrying Reversal Charms stand on the totems while the player holding the Ritual Reagent moves to the serpent.

A special action button then appears for all five players. The Ritual Reagent carrier uses theirs first, followed by the four Reversal Charms. Once all five have been used, the Ascendent Serpent transforms into a large version of Slitherfang, and every player in the group can interact with it to receive the pet.

One group, one run

There is a hard limit on how far a single ritual goes. The cleansed Slitherfang NPC despawns as soon as five players have clicked on it, so no one can join the instance after the ritual is finished to claim additional pets. Players who have already cleared Mythic 0 this week can re-clear the dungeon to enact the ritual, though they will not receive any loot from the bosses on that repeat run.

Wowhead credits the player Bellzzar with the discovery and with the explanation of how the ritual works. Collectors looking for a matching set will find that Slitherfang shares a colour scheme with The Writhing Brood, a mount that drops from Zul'jan's Strongbox at the end of the same dungeon.
