According to Video Games Chronicle, Compulsion Games' 2025 action-adventure game South of Midnight is now self-published by the studio on Steam. This change was spotted by Respec and can be seen on SteamDB, with the publisher on the game's listing being changed from Xbox Game Studios to Compulsion Games on August 11, 2026.
Video Games Chronicle reports that this change follows Microsoft's announcement in July that it would cut five studios and thousands of jobs, with Compulsion Games being one of the affected studios. Since then, studios have thanked Xbox for allowing them to go independent, and Compulsion Games has announced that it is seeking to collaborate with partners to develop new projects.
It is unknown whether console versions of South of Midnight will also become self-published by Compulsion Games, as listings on console platforms haven't changed yet, according to Video Games Chronicle. The game received a review from VGC's Chris Scullion, who stated that South of Midnight is a gorgeous adventure with wonderful performances, striking visuals, and solid platforming gameplay, but its combat is repetitive and reductive.
