Square Enix has not decided on a physical release for FF7 Revelation

Square Enix has not settled whether Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the closing entry in its remake trilogy, will ship on a disc. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told GamesRadar+ at the Final Fantasy 14 Berlin Fan Fest that the company is still working out what the game's product lineup will look like.

Hamaguchi said internal discussions on the exact SKU lineup for Revelation were ongoing and that he could not say anything definitive at this stage. He acknowledged that a physical edition is something players want, and something he wants as well.

Why the director says discs still matter

Asked why physical media matters from a developer's point of view, Hamaguchi pointed to events like Fan Fest, where players bring copies of games for developers to sign. He called that a wonderful culture and said it would be a shame to lose it. He also conceded that the industry is trending toward an all-digital future regardless of what fans or developers would prefer.

Even so, he does not expect physical releases to disappear outright, suggesting the format may survive in other shapes — a box containing a download code, key cards of the kind Nintendo uses, or a boot disc. Many physical releases already amount to a code in a plastic case, a format that preserves the shelf presence and the autograph but not the ownership or preservation benefits of a full disc.

The trilogy's track record

The first two entries in the trilogy both shipped with discs in the box, and a PlayStation 5 bundle collecting Remake and Rebirth carried three discs. That history is why Hamaguchi's uncertainty registered as news rather than routine: the series has so far delivered on physical editions, and Revelation is the entry that would complete the set.

Timing is not the constraint. Sony plans to end new physical disc production in 2028, which leaves room for a 2027 release. Polygon, which reported the comments, noted that if Revelation itself does not get a disc, Square Enix could still issue a complete physical edition of the trilogy later.

Hamaguchi closed by saying he hopes the company can arrive at something as close as possible to what players want, and pointed to future announcements for the answer.
