Square Enix announced Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, a remake of its 1995 role-playing game, during the September Nintendo Direct, GameSpot reported. The company describes the project as a "full 3D remake," and it is scheduled to launch on February 16, 2027 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch consoles.
Compared with the original, the remake adds upgraded graphics, fully voiced cutscenes, overhauls to combat and other mechanics, and selectable difficulty levels, along with several other new features.
Story and systems
The game follows eight protagonists on a quest to find the survivor of a calamity. Each has a personal reason for the search, but the driving force behind all of them is the Rise of Morastrum, an event that occurs every 300 years and destroys all newborn life except for a single survivor, known as the Child of Destiny.
As in the original, players can meet and recruit more than 20 other characters along the way, each with individual stats and abilities. Those characters can be tuned further with a Nonastrum, a star of fate the player assigns that influences their affinity for techs and spells. The Freeform Scenario System lets player choices shape which characters they meet, and in battle those characters can "glimmer" new techniques, gain evasion skills and perform United Attacks.
Square Enix said War Mode and the Business minigame will also return, letting players command armies or build a trading empire away from the main storyline.
The SaGa series began in 1989 on the Game Boy and became a hit franchise for Square, known for open-world exploration and non-linear storytelling. Entries have appeared periodically since, and the Romancing SaGa 3 remake follows Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, which Square Enix released in 2024.
