STALKER 2 expansion Cost of Hope lands August 20 with free 2.0 update

GSC Game World has dated the survival shooter's first paid story DLC alongside a free update that moves the base game to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5.

GSC Game World has set August 20 as the release date for Cost of Hope, the first paid story expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The studio announced the date with a new trailer and confirmed that the long-promised free Update 2.0 will arrive the same day.

Cost of Hope is the first major add-on for the survival shooter since the base game arrived in 2024, and the first of two story expansions the studio has planned. It returns to Skif, the base game's protagonist, who follows a mysterious signal into parts of the Zone that were previously off limits, including the Iron Forest and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

Duty and Freedom at the power plant

The expansion turns on the long-running rivalry between Duty and Freedom, two of the Zone's dominant factions, and asks the player to take a side as that conflict escalates. GSC Game World says Cost of Hope adds dozens of hours of play along with new weapons, gear and enemies. Rock Paper Shotgun reports that the power plant, last visitable in 2008's STALKER: Clear Sky, has picked up at least one new mutant type in the interim, an armoured humanoid.

Explore uncharted locations, encounter unexpected allies and enemies, discover powerful weapons, and experience a gripping new story.

The free update carries the bigger technical change

Update 2.0 goes out free to everyone who owns STALKER 2 and carries the larger technical change of the two releases. The game moves from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5.4, a migration GSC Game World committed to in August 2025 and which Rock Paper Shotgun expects to affect performance, lighting and stability. The studio says the update will also bring content of its own to the base game, but has not detailed it. Further work on the A-Life system that drives ambient NPC behaviour has been rumoured rather than confirmed.

The August 20 date keeps Cost of Hope inside the summer 2026 window GSC Game World gave when it announced the expansion in March. The studio says it will share more about both releases as the date approaches.
