GSC Game World has detailed a free 2.0 update for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl called Back to the Zone, which the studio said will release on August 20 alongside the shooter's first story expansion. PC Gamer reports the studio set out the patch in an article on its own website.
The headline change is an overhaul of the Zone's lighting. "The sun still shines brightly outside, but now it plays differently across the environment on the ground—shadows and reflections included," GSC wrote. Indoor lighting has been altered to look more realistic, and the studio said the landscape and vegetation have been reworked for a more natural appearance.
Changes to A-Life
The update also revises A-Life, the system governing the behaviour of the mutants and rival stalkers that move around the Zone. GSC framed the work as an attempt to make the world read as an inhabited space rather than a continuous firefight.
The Zone isn't one constant gunfight. It's a lonely place where life carries on by its own rules.
In practice, GSC said that means giving creatures more places to occupy — campfires and bus stops among them — and increasing the number of conflicts that occur around those spots. The studio said it has also fixed immersion-breaking glitches reported since launch, including enemies shooting through walls.
Other additions
Back to the Zone adds a custom difficulty setting that lets players adjust parameters individually, along with several new pieces of equipment.
- Custom difficulty covering combat, anomalies and the in-game economy
- New weapons and scopes
- Dynamic fog that can be used tactically
- Binoculars
The patch launches in tandem with Cost of Hope, the first of two planned expansions. PC Gamer reports the DLC centres on the series' authoritarian Duty faction and sends players toward the secrets held at the centre of the Zone.
Stalker 2 launched in November 2024 and has received a series of large patches since, addressing bugs, broken quests and performance problems reported at release.
