Street Fighter 6’s yearly balance patch leaves Drive Rush untouched

Capcom released its annual balance update alongside new character Yasmine, and players say the systems they wanted changed were not.

Capcom released Street Fighter 6’s annual balance patch on August 3, and the reception among players has been largely negative. The complaint is not the size of the changes to individual characters but what the update leaves alone: the core systems players have argued about for three years.

Capcom takes a conservative approach to Street Fighter 6 balance, rarely altering systems outside new character releases. One major balance patch lands each year, usually timed to avoid disrupting the Capcom Pro Tour circuit, which concentrates expectation on a single annual release.

Drive Rush and throw loops survive again

Neither Drive Rush nor throw loops were changed. Drive Rush lets every character close distance with a quick forward charge, and critics say it pushes the game toward aggression compared with earlier Street Fighter titles, since many characters have Drive Rushes that are hard to interrupt. Throw loops let certain characters throw a cornered opponent repeatedly; they are escapable, but they leave the defender in a losing position and are widely regarded as tedious to play and to watch.

Character changes draw scrutiny

Several of the buffs have drawn attention. Ryu, already among the strongest characters through high damage and strong offense, received an improvement to Solar Plexus Strike; Capcom’s patch notes describe the goal as making the move more balanced. Sagat received a mix of nerfs and buffs that some players do not expect to weaken him, and M. Bison received buffs.

At the other end, Ed and Mai appear to have been cut back significantly. Much of the remaining roster received small adjustments that are not expected to shift high-level play. Some players have suggested the patch will push competitors toward newer fighting games such as Avatar Legends and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.

Yasmine arrives alongside

The update coincided with the release of Yasmine, a new character from the Philippines searching for her brother. Early reaction to her has been positive, with players responding to her movement style and her relationship with the established character Manon. Her debut has nonetheless been overshadowed by the wider disappointment with the patch.
