Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick has said Borderlands 4’s commercial performance has not changed publisher 2K’s plans to keep supporting the looter shooter. Asked by IGN whether the game’s performance had affected plans for long-term support, Zelnick answered no.
Performance has not affected our plans at all. We have another Borderlands [content pack] coming. We continue to support the title. We’ve had plenty of incremental releases of content. So no, we’re totally supporting it. We’re thrilled with the performance, and thrilled with the reviews and the scores.
The next content drop is dated. Loveless the Hacker, a new Vault Hunter, arrives in early September as part of the paid Story Pack 2. Story Pack 2 and Bounty Pack 5 release on the same day, alongside the Version 1.10 update. Story Pack 1, which added the playable character C4SH, shipped earlier this year.
What has not been set out is anything beyond that. Gearbox has yet to publish a content roadmap for the rest of 2026 and after, and IGN reports that the gap has left parts of the Borderlands community asking how long meaningful DLC support will continue as the game approaches the end of its first year, and what any year-two content would cost.
A rocky first year
Borderlands 4 launched in September and drew sustained criticism over severe PC performance problems, with Gearbox chief executive Randy Pitchford responding directly to complaints on social media. Zelnick has previously acknowledged that the technical issues cost the game “a little bit of softness” in sales, while saying he expected “it’ll all be made up” given enough time. A Nintendo Switch 2 version was scrapped, with Take-Two saying Gearbox had prioritized continued improvements to the game on the platforms it had already shipped on.
The game’s Steam user reviews remain at a “mixed” rating. IGN reports that after launching to more than 300,000 concurrent players on Valve’s platform, Borderlands 4 now averages a concurrent peak in the four figures — a count that covers Steam alone and not the console versions.
